Hiroshima and The Sabbath
Yesterday morning we departed camp at 6:00am for the city of Hiroshima. Waking up early enough (before five) contributed to a general feeling of sleep deprivation. Fortunately the buses have great AC.
Driving into Hiroshima, you would never be able to guess that level of devastation that occurred 70 years ago. The museum described very specific details about the bombing. A good portion of us left with mixed feelings about the message portrayed there.
After seeing the museum, we attended a public reading of some poems written by survivors of the bombing. For the last twenty minutes, they opened up the stage to any scouts who wanted to share their feelings. Gavin Tobin got up and gave an excellent speech.
We continue to make friends from all over the world. Every night we have been inviting people to join us for dinner and playing games and talking with them late into the night. One group of British scouts in particular have become our closest crew over all. They are some quite decent chaps.
Our crew ended last night by signing hymns in a circle at our campsite. Many passersby stopped and listened to us.
We began our Fast Sunday by attending an inter-religious ceremony. We heard songs and prayers from all the major religions. Ten members of our crew sang I Am a Child of God in front of the thousands of people there.
Sacrament meeting was very well attended. The current General Young Men's president was conducting, with two members of the Seventy in attendance.
We broke our fast by sampling food from all the different countries. Some of it was good. Some of it was... interesting.
This is a Koala neckerchief slide. One of its eyes fell out so we drew on a eye patch. Now we call him Nick Furry.
